Why take a Ginger capsule (when you can just eat stir fry with ginger and soy sauce)?

Many lay people say that ginger is a good anti inflamatory.

Why do you care?

Because some researchers quoted by the National Institute of Health in the US have reported “potent” effects of ginger when used as an anti-inflammatory aid.

Hmmm. Could be evidence for those traditional practitioners claims.

Those same people people also say that ginger is good for nausea, digestion, and morning sickness.

Why does that matter?

Johns Hopkins Medicine also quotes ginger as having benefits for digestion and to ease nausea.

Meanwhile, This article says that ginger use can reduce and help modulate blood sugar, which means that it’s possible that it could be useful for people who are overweight or have diabetes.

I take a capsule regularly that has whole dried ginger root in it. It is cheap, very easy, and I get good results in my body and blood tests.

Tip: I check that there’s ginger in there when they arrive by removing one capsule from the jar and tasting/smelling it—it’s worth being careful.

Michelle Richmond gave me a great tip in 2011, which was to use the back of a tea spoon to peel fresh ginger and it comes straight off nice and easy. Much less wastage and mess.

I also eat foods that contain ginger, especially noodles and stir-fries.

I take a ginger supplement capsule regularly because when I do I feel healthier, happier, and have less inflammatory markers in my blood tests (note: correlation is not causation and there could be other factors at play).

Sometimes What Glimmers IS Gold

If you want to read a truly great post, head over to Sara Flower Kjeldson Writes, and read the post ‘Know Your Glimmers‘.

That’s something to put anyone in a good mood!

The beauty of Sydney’s beaches and bays is a glimmer for me. Walking there makes me feel calm, happy and enervated. Early in the morning the life guards and councils sweep the sand, maintaining the beach and clearing it from last night’s parties!

To buy or not to buy…

“Urges are like bubbles in a lemonade glass. If you leave the lemonade glass on the counter and go back to it the next day, [there are] not so many urges, not so many bubbles.”

Loved this article from the ABC news about how to buy less stuff online. This is good advice, and also a good article.

Thanks ABC.

It’s so exciting when new art materials come in the mail! It pays to be careful of what you buy and how often though. Surf those urges!

Sweet Healthy Cinnamon…

Things we eat every day can be extremely healthy.

I learned about the benefits of cinnamon from World’s Healthiest Foods, which is an amazing website by a guy called George Mateljan.

I started taking it in capsule form 3 days per week around 2017.

Next time the Doctor (GP) checked my cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar, they were noticeably lower.

Why is this?

  • Cinnamon contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. This study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22007625/ says that cinnamon has “anti-microbial, anti-fungal, antiviral, antioxidant, anti-tumour, blood pressure-lowering, cholesterol and lipid-lowering and gastro-protective properties”.

  • According to this article https://badgut.org/information-centre/health-nutrition/cinnamon/ from the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research, Ceylon cinnamon can sometimes help balance blood sugars because it improves insulin sensitivity, slows the rate that your stomach empties, and improves glycogen synthesis in the liver.

  • This study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28887086/ found that triglycerides reduced by an average of 23 mg/dL when taking cinnamon and total cholesterol reduced by an average of 13mg/dL. This effect got bigger the longer cinnamon was taken over 16 weeks.

It doesn’t matter what size or shape you are, you can always make small changes to improve your life

For me, supplements are a way to love my body into health. They’re something I can do to make my body healthier and make my mood better.

I only take Ceylon Cinnamon because it has the least amount of coumarin which can be harmful for my liver. I also take cinnamon in small doses and not every day.

I buy Ceylon Cinnamon either from here: https://au.iherb.com/ or https://www.pipingrock.com/

Healthy healthy fatty fatty

I have been taking Curcumin for over 12 years.

I started when I got the news that I was pre-diabetic.

At that time I weighed around 150kg, (330 pounds).

I made a lot of changes to my supplements, and some changes to my diet.

I haven’t managed to maintain any of the weightloss, in-fact I’ve put weight on.

However, 6 months later, I was no longer pre-diabetic, and I’ve had good blood sugar results since then (written in September 2022).

I buy my curcumin from: https://www.turmeric-curcumin.com/ (not an affiliate– I get no material benefit for sharing this link).

That website is basically a single product shop with a long list of quotes from scientific studies that have shown that Curcumin in small doses is beneficial to humans for disease prevention, disease management, and good health. The company ships internationally, and there are steep discounts for bulk buys.

The FDA has classified curcumin as generally safe in small doses.

The reason I take curcumin is here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5664031/

The authors state that benefits of curcumin could include:

  • Benefit to inflammatory conditions
  • Benefit to metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, hypergylycemia, high blood pressure, etc)
  • Could help in the management of degenerative eye conditions such as macular degeneration
  • Might have benefit to kidneys
  • Antioxident (improves systemic markers of oxidative stress)
  • Benefits to arthritis
  • Could reduce markers of brain aging and liver injury in healthy people
