Plenty of Honey in my Cupboard (Part 1 of 3)

Happiness by Roger McGough

Lying in bed of a weekday morning
Autumn
and the trees
none the worse for it.
Youve just got up
to make tea toast and a bottle
leaving pastures warm
for me to stretch into

in his cot
the little fella
outsings the birds

Plenty of honey in the cupboard
Nice.

Here is some stuff that makes me happy

  • When I am stressed and lacking. I call this feeling “not enough honey in the cupboard”
  • I try to remember that it is a feeling, it may not be based on the whole truth
  • I try to remember that I’ve got loving relationships and a safe place to live, I’ve got a job, I’ve got a whole library in my lounge room, and I can make a list of all the conditions for happiness in my life
  • Thich Nhat Hanh says that if we made a list of the conditions for happiness in our lives, it wouldnt just cover one page, or five pages, or 10 pages, but infinity pages
  • He says start with your eyes. Wow! I’ve got eyes, what amazing colours I can see, when amazing depth perception and discernment. Then my legs. Wow! My legs can lift me, they support me to walk and run and play. What amazing muscles and bones and tendons and ligaments. Wow. Then arms, then mouth, then running water, etc
  • 4 billion people in the world live on less than $8 per day. Remembering this helps me.
